Craft Gossip

Planning ahead for cool Spring evenings and A/C, I’ve been searching for some new light weight sweater patterns to crochet.

We are fortunate to have a bunch of great crocheters who offer their designs to us online.  Just dig around online and you’ll find a bunch of goodies.  For all shapes, all sizes, all occasions.

Here are a few of the lovelies I’ve found online:

And, it’s completely UNFAIR that this pattern is not available in crochet.  Check it out and tell me how to recreate it in crochet PLEASE!!

The knitted kimono pattern is gorgeous, but think about the yarn cost. It is the yarn that makes that pattern pop. Knitting uses about one-third as much yardage as crochet for the same area of material. That yarn costs about seven dollars each ball, and the pattern wants from 13 to 25 balls of it. If you’re that wealthy, hire me to teach you to knit it! That would be easier than trying to replicate it in crochet. It could be done as a crochet project, but it wouldn’t look the same even if you used the identical yarn. Also, it would be thick and heavy enough to withstand a Montreal winter, never mind some spring breezes or air-conditioning!

JESSICA-JEAN, I don’t agree that knitting uses only 1/3 the amount of yarn that crochet does. I know crochet uses more yarn, but not that much. In fact, I believe it’s about 1/3 more for crochet rather than 2/3 more. At any rate, I’m good at making yarn substitutions for the really expensive stuff unless I happen to run across a great sale. I agree that this particular sweater might be too heavy for Spring – but I just couldn’t resist sharing the pretty sweater with everyone! jd

They’re all nice, but like you, I really like that knitted one too.

Try the knitted pattern in crochet. Use 1 sc for each knit. When you are purling, just sc in the back/front ridge of the stitch (depending on which side of the sweater is facing you). If there’s a yo, just ch 1. If there’s a dec, crochet 2 sts tog; an increase, add another sc in that particular st.

TAMMY – Your idea just might work – but I get chills thinking about making an entire sweater in single crochets. Not in this lifetime! I’d have to substitute a different stitch pattern. What I like most about this sweater is the way it’s cut – boxy – which suits my body just fine. I’m going to work on how to ‘convert’ it to crochet, altho’ my ‘pattern’ might not look much like this beauty. jd
