Crochet door stops are a fantastic way to use your crochet skills for practical purposes. Unlike their mundane store-bought counterparts, handmade door stops can be customized to fit your decor and personality. They’re also great stash busters, allowing you to use up leftover yarn from other projects. Plus, they make wonderful gifts for friends and family who appreciate the personal touch of a handcrafted item.

How to make your crochet door stop heavy

Adding weight to a door stop is crucial to ensure it effectively holds the door in place. Here are some options for adding weight to a door stop:

Sand: Sand is a popular choice because it’s dense and easy to find. You can fill a small bag or directly add it to the door stop for a solid weight, make sure your sand is dry before adding it.

Rice: Rice is another common option. It’s relatively heavy and easy to work with, making it a good filler for door stops. However it is not my favorite as moisture can cause the rice to go mouldy.

Gravel or Small Pebbles: Gravel or small pebbles are very effective for adding substantial weight. They are particularly useful for outdoor door stops that need extra stability.

Metal Weights: You can use small metal weights, such as washers or nuts, to add significant weight without taking up much space.

Poly Pellets: These plastic pellets are often used in weighted blankets and stuffed animals. They are easy to handle and provide good weight. Poly pellets are one of my favorite “weighted” options when crafting.

Cat Litter: Clean, unused cat litter can be used as a filler. It’s relatively heavy and inexpensive it is moisture absorbing though so watch the weather if your door is not completely covered.
