The resulting projects are well worth the effort, as they have a unique and natural look that is truly one-of-a-kind.

One thing I did find is the Jute dried out my hands a little so make sure you have some moisturizer on hand or wear your compression gloves if you use those. So what exactly is Jute? Jute is a natural vegetable fiber grown in tropical climates such as India. It is a grass-like natural fiber. It often reminds me of horse hay or hessian. Jute is also a good yarn to crochet with for anyone who is strictly vegan and prefers not to crochet with animal products.
So overall I love working with jute and found it an interesting and durable texture to Crochet with. All of these patterns were free at the time of writing this article.

A crocheted jute basket can be made using gardening twine. Jute is stiffer than yarn so is suitable for basket-making. Crocheted baskets can be made in an hour or two.
This jute basket is crocheted from colored jute twin and can be made in an afternoon. Making a basket from jute twine requires knowledge of three common crochet stitches: the chain stitch, single crochet stitch, and the slip stitch. Even beginning crocheters can undertake this easy project.
Crocheted Jute Basket
Materials to make this basket: 2 skeins of green or beige jute twine and size 3-5 crochet hooks. The hook size is adjusted according to the thickness of the twine.
2-3 skeins of jute garden twine, 140’/ 43m, 3-ply
Number 4 hook
How to Crochet a Round Jute Basket
This basket is started with a beginning loop. The loop allows for the first row of stitches. After the first row is completed, the tail is pulled to tighten the center ring.
Basket bottom
Row 1: Beginning loop: cast stitch on hook and CH 1, 8 SC in the loop, SS to join
Row 2: 2 SC in each stitch (16 stitches), SS to join
Row 3: 2 SC in each stitch (32 stitches), SS to join
Row 4: 1 SC in each stitch, SS to join
Row 5: 1 SC in each stitch, SS to join
Row 6: 2 SC in each stitch, SS to join
Row 7-10: 1 SC, SS to join
Row 11: SC in front of each stitch; SS to join, CH 1, turn. This row forms the outside edge for the bottom of the basket, additional rows form the sides.
Basket side
Rows 12-17: SC in each stitch, SS and fasten off. This uses up a second roll of jute twine. Roll basket edge outward.
(For a larger basket, the third skein of twine can be used. The edge should be rolled for a stiffer basket.)
Crocheted Jute Basket Pattern Notes
Select hook size depending on the thickness of the jute.
Pull a strand of twine through the first stitch to mark where each row begins. Because of the fuzzy look of jute, it may be hard to determine the actual first stitch.
Crochet in the first stitch for each round (some patterns call for a CH 1 before proceeding with each row but this leaves a visible loop in the joining span).
When attaching the new skein, the new strands should be woven in at the joining area. Raffia can vary in color and joining it at the seam will help the new color to blend better. Carry the extra two strands from the first and second skein at the back of the work and make sure to crochet in, as the row is worked.
A larger basket can be made using 3-4 skeins of jute twine. The edge should be folded to add stiffness.
Crocheted jute baskets make functional and attractive decor items for the home.
Bernadette says
Just a thought for next year, or even for a gift this year–in place of coco shell liners for wire planters, I crocheted jute liners. That was especially helpful for the oddly-shaped planters, and for the unconventional planters, like any decorative wire basket that can hold plants.
