This is NOT crochet. It’s sorta fake crochet! We’re always looking for ways to use up partial skeins of thread and yarn. This site has nine patterns that are ‘fake’ and are made with thread/yarn. There is a nice tutorial for each of the projects. The crafting is not difficult and might be a nice activity for the youngsters home over the holiday vacation. If they get bored, pull out the yarn or thread, fire up your computer to get the tutorials, and let them go to town!
What isn’t on this site is the sparkly stuff! I think I’d get a couple bottles of that really fine glitter and sprinkle them on the projects while they are still damp. You could also use small lengths of floral wire (in the floral department of most craft stores and at the dollar stores) to add beads to the project. Buttons, too! Hot glue could work wonders also (but not in the hands of the young ones!).
I’m partial to stars, but there are eight other designs to choose from, each with clear directions. However you choose to make them, they’ll be a hit! Nice, easy, inexpensive projects never go out of style when we’re looking for ways to keep the kids (and even ourselves) occupied and productive.
UPDATE: Check out these cool stars from Lionbrand. You can get the free instructions here.

I rem’ber doing this stuff when I was a kid! Blowing up balloons, wrapping it with starch soaked strings. Letting it dry. Then painting them. The fun part was popping the balloon and seeing inside. Brings back memories! Thanks!
