This is a cytosine (Whatever that is! Something to do with DNA). To see this and lots of other crocheted balls assembled into molecules – or baby toys – check out the blog linked near the photo. Way too many single crochets for me – but very cool nonetheless.
Reminds me of the stained slides of bacteria and such I used to see on Grand Rounds at Washington University Medical School. One of the professors actually framed them and used them for art on the walls of his home! Check this one out. It’s Brucella (a nasty bacterium):

Oh my goodness. When my boyfriend’s sister, a chemistry education student, saw this, she got SO excited and begged me and her mother to crochet her some molecules, too. So that’s what we’re doing for her. Thanks for posting this! … I think! 😉
