Free Crochet Pattern – Emotional Support Chicken

July 25, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

There are crochet projects that are pretty, crochet projects that are practical, and then there are crochet projects that make you grin before you’ve even finished weaving in the ends. This free crochet Emotional Support Chicken pattern is absolutely one of those.

Soft, squishy, slightly ridiculous in the best possible way, and wonderfully comforting to hold, this plush crochet chicken is the sort of handmade project that quickly becomes a favourite. Whether you make one as a funny handmade gift, a stress-relief desk buddy, a couch companion, or just because your yarn stash clearly needed poultry, this little chicken has plenty of personality.

I’ve also included a printable PDF version and free Emotional Support Chicken gift tags, so you can turn your finished chicken into a sweet little care package, market stall item, teacher gift, or “you’re having a rough week” surprise.

Made with chunky plush yarn, this beginner-friendly crochet chicken pattern works up into a huggable, rounded shape using simple crochet stitches and easy assembly. It is a lovely project for crocheters who enjoy quick amigurumi-style makes but do not want anything too fiddly or tiny. No microscopic beaks here, thank goodness.

The best part? You can customise your Emotional Support Chicken with different yarn colours, silly eyes, a bright comb, or even make a whole flock in cream, brown, speckled, or rainbow yarn. Once you make one, don’t be surprised if everyone in the house suddenly decides they need their own squishy crochet chicken for emotional support too.

Free Pattern vs Paid Emotional Support Chicken Crochet Pattern

If you have been searching for an Emotional Support Chicken crochet pattern, you may have noticed that some versions are sold as paid digital downloads or kits. Those can be lovely if you want everything bundled together, but if you already have plush yarn, stuffing, a crochet hook, and a few scraps for the beak and comb, this free version is a great place to start.

This CraftGossip pattern is ideal for crocheters who want to make a soft, rounded chicken without buying a separate download first. You can read the full instructions here, check the supplies before you begin, and use the printable gift tags to turn your finished chicken into a funny handmade gift.

For best results, use a soft super bulky chenille or blanket yarn, a comfortable 6mm crochet hook, locking stitch markers, safety eyes, and plenty of stuffing. If you make amigurumi or plush crochet toys often, those are the sorts of supplies worth keeping in your craft basket anyway — because nothing ruins a good crochet mood faster than having to hunt for one missing safety eye.

Finished size will vary depending on yarn, hook size, and stuffing tension, but using super bulky chenille yarn, the chicken measures approximately 8–10 inches long and 6–7 inches tall.

 What You’ll Need:

  • Super bulky yarn (such as Bernat Blanket or any soft chenille yarn)
  • 6mm crochet hook
  • 12mm safety eyes (or larger if you want that googly-eyed anime vibe)
  • Yarn needle or tapestry needle
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • Stitch markers (locking ones are easiest)
  • Scraps of red and orange yarn for the comb and beak

Chicken Body (Worked in a Spiral):

We’ll be crocheting in the round, so don’t join at the end of each round. Just keep going in a spiral and mark the beginning of each round with your stitch marker.

Start with a magic ring.

  • Rnd 1: Work 7 single crochet (sc) into the ring. (7 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Increase (2 sc) in every stitch around. (14 sts)
  • Rnd 3: 1 sc, inc around. (21 sts)
  • Rnd 4: 2 sc, inc repeat around. (28 sts)
  • Rnd 5: 3 sc, inc repeat. (35 sts)
  • Rnd 6: 4 sc, inc repeat. (42 sts)

Want a fluffier friend? Keep increasing in pattern: (5 sc, inc), (6 sc, inc)… you get the idea.

Optional shaping:

  • Rnd 7: Single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch. This gives a subtle base ridge and extra shape.

Rnd 8: Regular sc in each stitch.
Rnds 9–17: Keep going with plain sc rounds. That’s 9 more rounds to build up the height.

Want it taller? Feel free to add extra rounds here!

Fasten off and leave a long yarn tail to stitch the chicken closed later.

 Assembly Time:

  • Start by folding the top opening shut, and use your yarn needle to stitch across—grabbing one loop from each side as you go.
  • Once halfway closed, pause and fill your chicken with stuffing.
  • Place the safety eyes about 2 rounds from the bottom, spacing them 3–4 stitches apart.

Baby-friendly tip: If making for a child under 3, skip the safety eyes and embroider small vertical ovals using black yarn instead.

 Beak & Face:

Grab a bit of orange or yellow yarn and stitch two short horizontal bars between the eyes to form the beak. Fasten off and hide the tail inside.

Finish stitching the rest of the opening shut. Gently pull on the yarn to shape the ends so they tilt up a little—it gives that perfect chubby-chicken silhouette.

Comb on Top:

Using red yarn (or any fun color), insert your hook where you want the comb to sit.

  • Ch 1
  • Work 3 double crochets (dc) into the first stitch
  • In the next stitch, work 2–3 more dc
  • Ch 1 again, and slip stitch into the head to anchor the comb in place
  • Tie off and weave in the end on the inside

 Done and Dusted!

You’ve just made a big, plush Emotional Support Chicken, and honestly? It deserves a spot on your couch, your desk, or even in your car as a silent road trip buddy.

Give your new chicken a name (mine’s called “Henrietta, Queen of Comfort”) and tag us @CraftGossip when you share. We want to see every quirky chicken out there bringing joy into the world.
