Maybe you don’t have one of these (yarn winder)
of even one of these (nostepinne). Maybe you’re a frugal crocheter who is always looking for cost effective ways to improvise, make-do, improve, and create.
Wish I was as smart as the person who came up with this frugal yarn winder! All it takes is a paper cup or a toilet paper core. Genius! It starts with your yarn ‘core’ and a slit to hold the yarn. Then, you wind. It doesn’t get much simpler – or much less expensive – than this.
Visit the blog here to see more about this and a whole host of other discoveries. Like this lovely scarf and this stunning shawl. My orchid lace weight yarn is waiting for me at the yarn shop, all wound up into a nice pull skein. Hmmmm. Which one will I make???

I inherit Mom’s old sewing machines every time she gets a new one. The bobbin winder on the last one didn’t work, so I improvised a winder using an old cassete tape player. Works great. I’ve also seen things like winders and swifts made from motorized Lego sets. Super clever.
