HARMONY GUIDE – CROCHET STITCH MOTIFS

July 11, by jd wolfe. Leave a Comment

The second Harmony Guide from Interweave Press this year is the Crochet Stitch Motifs, 250 Stitches to Crochet. It’s 270 pages, edited by Erika Knight, and retails for $22.95 USD. This is another winner from Interweave Press! If you read my review of their new ‘Basic Crochet Stitches’, you already know about the practical book cover, the great sketches of stitches and techniques, and that each motif is accompanied by both written and symbol instructions. This book even boasts a brief, but useful, guide to Irish Crochet.

I consider this to be a remarkable collectio of squares and other motifs. They are shown in one or multiples of colors. The collection starts with the most basic of granny squares and progresses to multi-dimensional, layered motifs, flowers, whimsical squares that will tempt you to spice up any afghan, sweater, or scarf.

My favorites:

daisy cluster on page 55

popcorn trefoil on page 69 (and I HATE popcorns)

spiral pentagram on page 74 (and I LOVE spirals)

spider square on page 87

royal square on pages 94-95 (what square takes 2 pages of instructions???)

rainbow petal motif on page 100 (did I tell you I hate popcorns?)

sylvan circles on page 118 – which would make a wonderful brooch

amanda whorl on page 123

tunisian flower on page 182 (might make me pick up my tunisian hook)

grape leaf on pae 249

six point snowflake on page 251 – truly remarkable.

Interweave Press never disappoints. I think this is another gem in their collection and would be useful in anyone’s crochet library. As they point out, ‘The Harmony Stitch Guides are at the heart of needlecrafts.’ I must agree.
