From time to time, I take a break from crocheting to make something on a circle loom. One of the few things I’ve ever won in my life was a set of the colorful plastic looms made by Provo Crafts. Since I’m not a fan of knitting but sometimes like the ‘look’ of knitting, I find that a small project on the circle loom satisfies me. So, when I saw this book, I took a look.
Loom knitting is highly repetitive (even more than crochet IMO) and can be somewhat limiting in comparison with crochet or standard knit, but it has its charms. Especially when it comes to scarves and caps. The look of knit comes easily when making projects that are actually just rectangles – an elongated one in the case of a scarf or a smaller rectangle sewed to create a circular cap. Of course, circular caps can be easily made on the circle loom. But, we’re talking scarves here. And, I LOVE making scarves. The best of many worlds. Doesn’t use too much yarn so I can splurge, can be made fancier with edgings, and almost instant gratification with a quick project.
In this book of 12 designs, you are sure to find a scarf you will love! In my case, it’s the Camden Scarf on page 32. It’s a simple style made totally luscious with the use of Red Heart Super Bulky Curly-Q yarn. I’ve been wanting a project to use this scrumptious yarn – and now I’ve found it!
From loops to miters, from cowl to a shrug-like hooded and armed ‘scarf’, from simple mesh to decadently fringed, these ARE stylish scarves. Take a break from crochet long enough to work up one of these. Should you choose a simpler scarf pattern, you can make it even more special by adding a crocheted edging. Check on www.crochetpatterncentral.com for a wealth of edging patterns.
