This idea is so simple and straightforward – and awesome – that I really wish I’d thought of it. Everyone seems to love the idea of a family name or monogram in filet. Filet is hard for me. I’ve done it successfully, but I’ve not taken on the arduous task of creating my or anyone else’s name in filet. Too much counting!
As much as you know I do not like joining oodles of squares, if I really needed to make something with a name or monogram on it, this is the technique I’d use. Making smaller squares, like granny’s daughters, would work for everything from a scarf to an inset in an afghan made of larger squares. The math of this would not defeat me!
You can get started with this technique using the information available here and here.
