Have you read?

Snarky Crochet Book Review: 15 Cheeky Patterns for Stitchers With a Sense of Humour

There are crochet books filled with delicate baby blankets, tasteful neutral scarves and sweet little woodland animals.

And then there is Snarky Crochet, a pattern book containing cat bottoms, raised middle fingers, spiteful scarves and enough yarn-related sarcasm to keep your crochet group entertained for an entire afternoon.

Honestly, crochet has always had a slightly rebellious side. Give a crocheter a hook, a ball of yarn and one mildly annoying person, and apparently we can turn all that frustration into home décor.

Written by crochet designer Lisa Ha of GettoHookingCrochet, Snarky Crochet: Irreverent Patterns, Jokes & Puns for Silly Stitchers is a collection of 15 funny crochet patterns designed for makers who prefer their handmade projects with a generous helping of sarcasm.

What Is Inside the Snarky Crochet Book?

The book includes 15 irreverent crochet patterns, along with jokes, yarn puns, amusing lists and tips for adding your own personality to the projects.

Some of the standout designs include:

  • Middle Finger Cactus
  • Cat Butt Coasters
  • Spite Stripe Scarf
  • Funny crochet gifts
  • Sarcastic home décor
  • Small novelty crochet projects

The patterns cover a useful mixture of project types rather than giving you 15 variations of the same joke. There are accessories, amigurumi-style makes, home décor projects and quick gag gifts.

That variety makes the book feel more usable than a novelty title you flick through once, laugh at and then leave on the coffee table.

Although, to be fair, this one would make an excellent coffee-table book too. Especially when your more conservative relatives visit.

Are the Crochet Patterns Beginner-Friendly?

The patterns are described as beginner-accessible, making this a good choice for confident beginners who understand basic crochet stitches and are ready to try simple shaping, colour changes and small constructed projects.

More experienced crocheters should find many of the patterns relatively quick to make. They would be particularly good for using leftover yarn, although we all know that using three metres from a half-finished ball does not technically reduce the yarn stash. It simply rearranges it.

Several readers have also noted that the book includes QR codes linking to video assistance, which could be particularly helpful for visual learners.

Beginners may still need to slow down when working on the shaped novelty pieces. Projects such as the Middle Finger Cactus rely on neat shaping and firm stuffing to make the finished gesture immediately recognisable. This is not the moment for a floppy finger.

The Middle Finger Cactus

The Middle Finger Cactus is likely to be the pattern that attracts the most attention.

It is cheeky without being overly complicated, and it has the advantage of looking like a fairly innocent crocheted cactus from across the room. Place it on an office shelf and let people work out the finer details for themselves.

We have already shared a similarly expressive Flip the Bird crochet pattern, which proves there is a surprisingly enthusiastic audience for crochet projects capable of communicating on your behalf.

These patterns make funny gifts for coworkers, friends, adult children or anyone who has ever said, “Please don’t make me another scarf.”

Cat Butt Coasters

Cat bum crochet patterns have been circulating around the yarn world for years, and they never seem to lose their appeal.

Perhaps it is because cats have absolutely no dignity about presenting their backsides to us, so turning that familiar view into a coaster feels strangely appropriate.

The Cat Butt Coasters included in Snarky Crochet would make a quick housewarming gift, stocking filler or craft-stall item for adult customers with a sense of humour. They are also small enough to make from cotton yarn scraps.

For even more mug-friendly ideas, our collection of more than 70 free crochet coaster patterns includes funny cat coasters, chicken butt coasters and plenty of less bottom-focused options too.

I would recommend using a firm cotton yarn for crochet coasters. Cotton absorbs moisture, holds its shape well and is less likely to melt if someone places a very hot cup on it. A multipack of cotton yarn from Amazon is also handy when you need several small amounts of different colours rather than full balls for every cat.

More Than Just Naughty Crochet Patterns

What makes this book work is that it does not simply rely on one rude joke repeated 15 times.

Lisa Ha’s humour runs through the pattern introductions, lists and crochet observations, giving the book a distinct personality. It feels like it was created by someone who genuinely understands both crochet and the strange little frustrations that come with it.

There are jokes about yarn, relationships, annoying people and the emotional support we occasionally receive from repeatedly pulling loops through other loops.

In other words, fairly standard crochet-group conversation.

Readers who enjoy adult novelty projects may also appreciate our cheeky crochet willy warmer pattern roundup. That collection travels a little further into adult gag-gift territory, so perhaps do not open it while sitting beside your grandmother unless she is the one who sent you the link.

For something smaller and surprisingly practical, there is also our free crochet book thong bookmark pattern. It is quick, uses hardly any yarn and is exactly the sort of silly handmade extra you could tuck inside a copy of this book.

Who Would Enjoy Snarky Crochet?

This book would suit:

  • Crocheters who enjoy sarcastic and irreverent humour
  • Confident beginners looking for unusual crochet patterns
  • Makers searching for funny handmade gift ideas
  • Crochet-group members who have made enough sensible dishcloths
  • Fans of novelty amigurumi and quirky home décor
  • Anyone needing a gift for a crocheter who already owns every sensible crochet book

It would also make a fun Secret Santa gift, birthday present or craft-group exchange. Pair it with a set of ergonomic crochet hooks, stitch markers and a few bright balls of yarn, and you have a gift that feels thoughtful without becoming too serious.

Is Snarky Crochet Worth Buying?

If your crochet taste leans towards elegant lace shawls and traditional heirloom blankets, this probably will not become your most-used reference book.

However, that is not really what it is trying to be.

Snarky Crochet is for crocheters who enjoy funny patterns, mildly inappropriate handmade gifts and projects that make people stop and laugh. The inclusion of 15 patterns, helpful instructions, video support, jokes and additional humorous material gives it more substance than a simple collection of novelty photographs.

I particularly like that the projects still require genuine crochet skills. The humour may be silly, but you are practising shaping, construction, colour choices, finishing and amigurumi techniques while making them.

That makes the book a good balance of entertaining and practical.

Our Verdict

Snarky Crochet: Irreverent Patterns, Jokes & Puns for Silly Stitchers is a colourful, funny and unapologetically cheeky crochet book for makers who are tired of pretending every ball of yarn must become something tasteful.

The patterns are approachable, giftable and wonderfully odd. Some will make excellent scrap-yarn projects, while others are destined to become conversation starters at work, at home or during the next family gathering.

It is not a book for everyone, and that is exactly the point.

You can find Snarky Crochet by Lisa Ha on Amazon.

Just be warned: once you make one Cat Butt Coaster, everyone you know will suddenly decide they need a complete set.
