The Cozy Granny Square Pocket Shawl – Free Crochet Pattern

October 5, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

If there’s one pattern I’ve truly fallen in love with this year, it’s this one. I’ve already made three of these cozy cottage pocket shawls — each one a little different in color but just as snuggly and loved. Two were gifts (and were immediately claimed as “the best thing ever” by the recipients), and one I just couldn’t part with. It’s now my go-to layer for school pick-up runs, chilly mornings in the garden, and even couch crochet time with a cuppa.

This shawl is the perfect blend of nostalgic charm and everyday comfort. The moss stitch gives it a gorgeous texture and gentle drape, while the granny square pockets add a playful, handmade touch — like a wink to the past with modern coziness. It’s stitched lengthwise for that lovely wrap-around effect, and those big square pockets? They’re as functional as they are adorable.

Whether you’re making one for yourself or whipping up a thoughtful handmade gift, this pattern is easy to follow, soothing to stitch, and endlessly customizable. I’m already planning my fourth (this time in earthy autumn tones with deep golden tassels… swoon!).

Grab your favorite worsted weight yarn, pop on a good podcast, and settle in — this one’s a keeper.

 Materials

  • 6.0mm crochet hook

  • Approx. 624 yards of medium worsted weight yarn (#4), in 3 colours:

    • Colour A (Main): ~530 yds

    • Colour B (Granny Accents): ~54 yds

    • Colour C (Granny Accents): ~40 yds

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

Feel free to substitute with any worsted weight yarn in your favourite colour palette.

 Sizing

  • Shawl Body: 61″ long x 11″ wide

  • Granny Pockets: 8″ x 8″

  • Optional Tassels: approx. 5.75″

Pattern is easily adjustable in both length and width (see below).

 Adjusting the Size

Length:
This shawl is crocheted lengthwise. The starting chain sets the final length. Original chain count: CH 241 (odd number).

  • Add or subtract chains in odd numbers to adjust.

  • Moss stitch slightly tightens row 1 — your piece will “shrink” a little after the first row.

Width:
The shawl is worked over 33 rows for an 11″ width.

  • Want it wider? Repeat the middle row section (we’ll point it out!) for each extra 3″ of width.

 Stitches & Abbreviations

  • CH – Chain

  • SC – Single Crochet

  • SK – Skip

  • CH-SP – Chain Space

  • ST(s) – Stitch(es)

  • SL ST – Slip Stitch

 Shawl Body Pattern

Using Colour A:

CH 241 (or any odd number for desired length)

Row 1:
SC in 4th CH from hook, CH 1, SK 1, SC in next CH; repeat from * to * across. Turn.

Row 2:
CH 1, SC in first ST, CH 1, SK 1, SC in next CH-SP; repeat to end. Turn.

Rows 3–11:
Repeat Row 2.

You can adjust the width by adding repeats here. Each full repeat = approx. 3 inches.

 Granny Square Pockets (Make 2)

Use Colours A, B, and C as desired.

Round 1 (Colour A):
Make a magic ring. CH 3 (counts as DC), 2 DC into ring, CH 2, 3 DC — repeat 3 more times for 4 corners total. Join with SL ST to top of CH 3. Fasten off.

Round 2 (Colour B):
Join yarn in any CH-2 corner space. CH 3, 2 DC in same space, CH 2, 3 DC (corner), [3 DC in next space, CH 2, 3 DC in next corner] — repeat around. Join. Fasten off.

Round 3 (Colour C):
Repeat as above to complete the square. Block to approx. 8″ x 8″.

 Attaching the Pockets

  • Lay the shawl flat.

  • Pin the granny square pockets 1 inch from the short edge of each end.

  • Use long yarn tails and a yarn needle to sew down three sides only, leaving the top open.

 Optional Tassels

Cut lengths of yarn (about 12″). Group 3–4 strands, fold in half, and attach with a lark’s head knot along the short ends of the shawl. Trim as needed.

 Blocking

Light steam blocking is highly recommended! It will soften the stitches and help the moss stitch lay flat, especially near the pockets.

 Final Thoughts

This pattern gives classic granny squares a fresh, wearable update! It’s beginner-friendly, relaxing to stitch, and makes for a perfect handmade gift — or a little something cozy just for you.
