Turkey Day Coasters- Free Crochet Pattern

In keeping with the website theme of Turkey Day, I’m offering the link to one of my all time favorite crochet patterns. I have a friend who collects turkeys so I made one of the for her. She ‘got’ it right away. A few other friends who were present didn’t seem to figure out as quickly as did Barb that this is the South end of a North bound turkey. It takes just a few minutes to work up with a few scraps of yarn. I just use a safety pin to put it on my lapel or sweater. Make one for yourself to wear to Thanksgiving Dinner – a sort of apology to the bird who may grace your table.

Crochet Turkey Pin or Magnet Pattern

You Will Need

Small amount of worsted-weight brown yarn
Small amount of worsted-weight gold yarn
Small amount of colorful variegated yarn
Size G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook
Safety pin or magnet strip
Yarn needle
Scissors
Craft glue, if attaching a magnet

Abbreviations

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
inc – work 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch

Body

With brown yarn, leave an 8-inch tail before beginning.

Round 1: Ch 2. Work 6 sc in the second ch from the hook. (6 sts)

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sts)

Round 3: Sc in the next stitch, inc in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * around. (18 sts)

Round 4: Sc in each of the next 2 stitches, inc in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * around. (24 sts)

Join with a sl st in the next stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ending yarn tail.

Feet

Cut a 6-inch length of gold yarn.

Thread the yarn through the joining slip stitch on the final round of the body. Tie the yarn into a series of seven knots to create a small textured foot.

Trim the yarn ends to approximately ¼ inch and gently separate the strands to create a frayed appearance.

Repeat in the next stitch of the body to make the second foot.

Tail Feathers

Count five stitches around the body from the second foot. Join the variegated yarn in this stitch.

Feather edging: Ch 8, sl st in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * 13 times.

Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends.

Finishing

Use the beginning 8-inch brown yarn tail to securely sew a safety pin to the back of the turkey.

Alternatively, glue a small magnet strip to the back. Allow the glue to dry completely before using the magnet.
