This lovely, frothy little baby shawl is U.S. Civil War era.  Despite the age of the design, it looks quite modern to me.  The original pattern appeared in Peterson’s Ladies Magazine  from the year 1860 and was designed by Mrs. Jane Weaver.

Unfortunately for me, the matching sweater (or sacque as they call it) is knitted.  I love the look of the set, but will stick to crochet.

While these designs are long out of copyright protection, they are still for sale.  Check used and vintage shops to find them.
