YARN CRAWL 2011

July 22, 2011 by jd wolfe

If you’ve never had the opportunity to participate in a Yarn Crawl, try to find one and get yourself involved.  It’s so much fun!  This year, a record twelve shops in and around St. Louis, MO are offering all kinds of sales and special hours of operation for the Event.  In addition, you get a Passport (from a participating shop or download from their website) that is stamped by each shop you visit (even if you don’t buy anything).  Then, there are drawings for all kinds of goodies!  Each stamp on your Passport improves your chance of winning the Grand Prize.

MARINA YARN SHAWL

The Marina Shawl shows one of the new yarns that Georgia at Hearthstone Knits  saw at Yarn Market and ordered lots of!  At the last meeting of the St. Louis Crochet Club, we got to play with partial skeins of it.  It works nicely for crochet as well as knit.  About this yarn and scarf, Georgia writes

“Here’s a project that’s a blast!  This is a 1-skein project using Marina yarn from Universal Yarns.  The strand looks like a strip of mesh crochet. You just work into the top “compartment.” Check out the video on Universal’s website.  Fast, fun, inexpensive gift — and don’t forget to make one for yourself.”

There are Yarn Crawls all over the country.  If you live in a big city, there will be a Yarn Crawl at some point.  In preparation for the arrival of all the new yarns the shop owners have seen and ordered at Yarn Market, they clear out their shelves to make room for the new skeins.  This results in wonderful savings on some of your favorite yarns as dye lots are discontinued or replaced, as yarns are discontinued or updated in colorways, and as the shops clear out orphan skeins and other odds and ends.  This is the perfect opportunity to pick up a skein or two of a luxury yarn you might not otherwise be able to afford.

It’s also a great opportunity to check out yarn shops that haven’t been on your radar.  Since I have my favorite LYS and two others I enjoy visiting, I haven’t investigated most of the others.  I’ll spend the better part of two days traveling hither and yon to visit each shop.  Even if I don’t win a thing, I’ll get to meet shop owners, experience the vibe of each shop, and most importantly for me, verify which ones are ‘crochet friendly’.

Here are the regional shops participating this year for the Yarn Crawl that will take place from Thursday & Friday, July 28th & 29th – 10am to 8pm
