Yarn: 1 skein (approx. 250 yds) of worsted weight acrylic. Sample shown in Red Heart Super Saver.
Materials: I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors
Size: 24″ long. One size fits most standard yoga mats.
Gauge: Not critical to this project.
Difficulty: Easy
Stitch Guide: ch – chain, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitches
Notes:
- A ch-3 at the beginning of a Round/Row counts as a dc.
- The bag and strap will stretch slightly with the weight of the mat, so even if you stitch tightly, the bag will still work out fine.
- When whip stitching the strap to the bag, stitch 2-3 times, or double up your yarn for a good, sturdy seam.
Instructions:
BAG
Start with magic ring OR use ch 4/join.
Round 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to 1st dc — 12 dc.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join — 24 dc.
Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] around, join — 36 dc.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, [dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, join — 48 dc.
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join — 48 dc.
Round 6: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip next st, [dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, skip next st] around, join — 12 groups of 3 dc. (Mark beginning of Round 6 with stitch marker. This is where you will attach your strap. Do not move marker.)
Round 7: Sl st over to next ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1] around, join with sl st to top of ch-3 — 12 groups of 3 dc and 12 ch-1 spaces.
Rounds 8 – 47: Repeat Round 7.
* Tote should measure 24″ long at this point. Add or decrease Rounds as needed.
Round 48: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join and fasten off.STRAP
Leaving a 10″ starting tail, ch 8.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across — 6 dc.
Row 2: Ch 2 (not a st), turn, dc in each dc across — 6 dc.
Repeat Row 2 until strap measures 27″ long. Fasten off, leaving a 10″ tail.ATTACHING STRAP
Using starting tail, whip stitch 1st end of strap to sts between Rounds 5 and 6 (at stitch marker).
Follow the groups of stitches up toward top of bag (so that strap ends are aligned), and whip stitch other end of strap to sts between Rounds 47 and 48.
Be sure to sew ends on securely (see note #3) and fasten off with a slip knot. Weave in all ends.Other Suggestions:
- Bag can be made using your favorite cotton yarn.
- Change colors every 2-4 rounds to create a striped bag.
- Work Round 48 in a shell pattern for a lovely, scalloped edging.
