20 Crochet Christmas Toys To Gift This Holidays

October 7, 2024 by Shellie Wilson

There is something extra lovely about a handmade Christmas gift, especially when it is soft, squishy, slightly magical, and made with yarn from the stash you promised yourself you were definitely going to use up this year.

These crochet Christmas toys are the sort of projects that feel joyful before they are even wrapped. We are talking cuddly bears, festive elves, gingerbread dolls, snowballs for indoor play, reindeer, Santa toys, and even little crochet games that can be pulled out during family gatherings. They are cute enough for children, nostalgic enough for adults, and just practical enough to justify buying one more ball of yarn. Not that we needed much convincing.

If you love making handmade holiday gifts, this roundup is a sweet place to start. These crochet toy patterns are ideal for Christmas stockings, teacher gifts, grandchild surprises, festive play baskets, handmade market stalls, and those “I need one more gift but I refuse to go back to the shops” moments.

And if you are already in full festive crochet mode, you might also enjoy browsing these Christmas crochet patterns for the holidays or this cute Christmas light gift card pocket crochet pattern for a quick add-on gift.

Why Crochet Christmas Toys Make Such Wonderful Gifts

Crochet toys have a way of becoming keepsakes. A scarf is lovely, a hat is useful, but a handmade teddy bear or little Christmas elf tends to get remembered. Children name them. Adults display them. Pets try to steal them. It is all part of the festive chaos.

These patterns are also a lovely alternative to plastic toys, especially if you are trying to make more meaningful gifts this year. A handmade crochet toy can be personalised with colour choices, embroidered details, tiny scarves, bells, buttons, or even a little gift tag with the year stitched on.

A few things to keep in mind when making crochet toys for Christmas:

Use safety eyes only for older children and decorative items. For babies or toddlers, embroidered eyes are usually the safer choice.

Choose washable yarn if the toy is going to be loved, dragged, snuggled, dropped in the car, or taken to bed every night.

Don’t overstuff amigurumi pieces. Firm stuffing gives shape, but too much stuffing can stretch the stitches and show through.

Keep a small basket near your chair for toy parts. Nothing disappears faster than one tiny crocheted ear when you are working on Christmas gifts in December.
