8 Crochet Patterns Of Character Hats For Kids

December 25, 2014 by Larissa Coleman

Do you have a little one in your life that loves any of the popular cartoon characters?  If you have never tried making a character-themed crochet hat or beanie before, then use one of these free crochet patterns to get started.  It’s the perfect time of year to make some up and keep those little ears warm, and the kids will love wearing them too. They also make wonderful handmade crochet gifts.

Most of these crochet beanies are themed for younger children but you may have an older child who likes cartoons still too or even an adult. I mean does anyone ever grow out of Hello Kitty? Looking for more characters? Check out these Character Beanies crochet patterns we found on Etsy.

I often get asked why do I crochet so many beanies? .It was a cold winter day when I walked into the cancer ward of the hospital. The children there were all fighting bravely against their disease, but I could see the fear in their eyes. I wanted to do something to make them feel better, so I decided to give them each a handmade crocheted beanie.

As I handed out the beanies, I could see the children’s faces light up. They were so excited to receive such a thoughtful gift. I could tell that the beanies were making a difference in their lives, and I was so happy to be able to help.

These beanies are more than just pieces of yarn; they are symbols of hope and strength. I am so grateful to be able to give them to the children who need them the most.  So this is why I make over 200 Beanies each year, any spare time I crochet beanies.

What yarn should I use for making crochet character hats?
You can use any type of yarn that is soft and comfortable, such as acrylic or wool blends. It’s important to choose yarn that is machine washable and dryable for easy care.

How do I determine the size of the hat?
To determine the size of the hat, measure the child’s head circumference and refer to a standard sizing chart for hats. Alternatively, you can make a hat that fits the child’s head by measuring as you go and trying it on periodically.

How do I wash crochet character hats?
It’s important to read the yarn label for washing instructions, but most acrylic and wool blend yarns can be machine washed and dried on low heat. To avoid stretching, reshape the hat while it’s wet and lay it flat to dry.

Can I make character hats for babies?
Yes, you can make character hats for babies, but it’s important to choose soft yarns that won’t irritate their sensitive skin. Be sure to adjust the size and design of the hat for a smaller head circumference and avoid any embellishments that could be a choking hazard.
