A Bit Off Topic – Metal Clay For Jewelry Makers

February 26, 2013 by jd wolfe

metal clay for jewelry makers

I was sent this book to review – but it’s been quite a while since I’d worked in metal clay.  So, I asked a friend, Joan Castle, who also crochets and knits, if she could tell us about this new offering from Interweave Press.   Joan write the following:

This book contains a comprehensive collection of metal clay techniques for both beginner and advanced metal clay enthusiasts.  The author has included a helpful chart showing the shrinkage and firing of the different types of clay and the firing methods of each type.  Colorful illustrations grace this book from cover to cover.

In the introductory chapter, the materials and tools are numbered so that a beginner can identify the items being described.  Basic techniques of working with soft clay as well as keeping clay workable, drying, and firing techniques are beautifully illustrated.

Bangle and ring making techniques are illustrated.  A chart with ring sizes to allow for shrinkage of different clays is included.  This is a must-have book for anyone interested in metal clay from the beginner to the advanced artist.  All techniques are shown in steps illustrated by color prints throughout the book.
