Christmas In July – A Crochet Plan

July 10, 2013 by jd wolfe

Christmas in July is not a new concept – but it’s one that allows us to take advantage of what might be a slow time of year to plan ahead for a very busy time of year.  So, let’s think about what we might want to crochet for Christmas, whether it’s for gifts of home decor.  There are so many options.  Here are some I suggest to get you started.

Begin with one that you can carry along during the hot summer, work up early, then let the kids help you add embellishments like beads, buttons, tiny ornaments.  You’ll have fun and get the whole family involved.  These make great hostess gifts too.  Starting now, you can make a whole forest  of them – in any colors ) that suit you.  I’ve made them with a dark green variegated yarn that worked up beautifully.  This is a free pattern.  Add in some of that eyelash yarn you still have hiding in your stash to add a bit of pizazz.  Work it up in black yarn with a metallic strand and have a very sophisticated tabletop decoration for New Year’s Eve.

Not much is cuter than these coasters.  Everyone will get a kick out of putting a drink on one of these happy critters.  Just seeing them makes me smile!

crochet plush towel topper tutorial

I posted these a long time ago and the post continues to get hits.  Apparently, good directions for applying towel toppers are hard to find.  I’m hoping that this will solve any problems you might have.  Email me if you have problems.  The wonderful thing about these towel toppers is how quickly they work up and what great gifts they make.  But, make some for yourself too.  See my tutorial here.

Everyone wants a special scarf for Christmas!  This one is a freebie from LionBrand and is adorable.  Perfect for matching mom and daughters, sisters, or BFF’s.  So easy and attractive.  You can get the free pattern on the LionBrand site.

crochet christmas stocking free pattern from red heart yarn

This is one of my favorite patterns for Christmas stockings.  It’s easy to follow, uses any acrylic yarn, and can be embellished as you wish – or not.  If you are a cross stitcher, you can add a name that way.  Other ways to add names is to write the name using an indelible maker on a pretty piece of fabric and glue to the cuff or pencil sketch the name and sew it on using seed beads.  Other methods will work too.  Just use your imagination.  I have made 5 or 6 similar stockings and red is always the most popular.  But, if you want to make one for each member of our family, you can easily vary the color of the body of the stocking.  Red, green, variegated, metallic, acrylic, wool, or cotton.  Anything goes, although I’ve always just used worsted weight acrylic for durablity and cost.  Get the free pattern from Red Heart.

That’s it for this instalment.  I’ll be posting more Christmas In July ideas soon.
