CROCHET CLUB AUGUST, 2010 MEETING ROUND UP

August 23, 2010 by jd wolfe

I’m choosing to post the Show ‘n Tell notes from the  St. Louis Crochet Club’s August, 2010 meeting here so I can highlight some of the yarns used.  Those of you familiar with my usual meeting ’round-up’ posts know that our local crochet club’s favorite thing to do is share our finished objects and our WIP’s.  Here’s what we had this month.

Teresa finally finished the beautiful waffle stitch babyghan in light blue edged in white.  She used Bernat Baby for this project and a K hook, (her fave) which created a featherweight afghan for baby.  Just lovely.

Cathy showed her Romantic Wrap in Aunt Lydia’s bamboo in the color Still Pool.  She used two strands of the #10 thread which produced a wrap with great drape.

Georgia, the shop owner and a knitter who occasionally crochets, showed her finished Coquille Shalette from Knitty.com in Zino yarn from Plymouth.  The  yarn and colorway are stunning.

Zino is a sock yarn that stripes beautifully in knit and worked up into a lovely shawlette that has an interesting shape, including a bit of a ruffle.  Georgia made some adaptations to the pattern to suit her own preferences.  But, it striped just like in the picture.

Rita brought in two finished Seraphina shawls to demonstrate the flexibility of this wonderful free pattern.  One was in a scrumptious moss green sock yarn.  The other, much larger version, was made with Lion  Brand Homespun.  I wanted to steal both of them!

Melinda, who’s expecting daughter #2 this Fall, is working on baby hats.  The one she completed in cranberry yarn was trimmed with a simple black ribbon – and is outstanding!  She’s using the same cranberry yarn to make a newsboy style and had completed another, simpler hat with the same yarn.

DJ, who gives away everything before our meetings, saved one babyghan to show.  It is a lovely blend of citrus/sherbet tones.  She was also starting on a baby floormat in coned yarns of velour and acrylic worsted weight.  The velour is a variegated which created a nice colorway with the purple worsted.

Valli wore her latest creation, a beautiful skirt in Brown Sheep fingering yarn.

The lesson Valli had to share is that she was wise to finish off the about 12 rows shorter than the pattern called for.  She hung the skirt for several days and it ‘grew’ to the perfect length.  It’s an overskirt which she wore over an offwhite underskirt with a tiny bit of eyelet ruffle peaking out below the green skirt.  She created the perfect four-season skirt.

Ronnie, our perpetually most prolific crocheter, had fewer than usual projects to show off this month since she’s been working overtime (at her paying job!).  First was the Blaze Wrap from the book Wrapped in Crochet by Kristin Omdahl.  Ronnie crocheted her Blaze Wrap in holiday yarn.  She used that same yarn to crochet a tea cosy pattern from Crochetroo.  Ronnie’s looks very different than Crochetroo’s original pattern, but is outstanding!  Next, Ronnie, using yarn that I owned but which baffled me so I gifted it to her and she made this beautiful Scarlet Ribbons Shawl.  Also, Ronnie crocheted a totebag made of this lovely Samira yarn in a delicious teal/black New Crochetcolorway.  Finally, we got to see Ronnie’s Diamond Mesh Overskirt from the book “New Crochet”.

Ronnie used a worsted weight yarn, variegated in muted citrus colors with a silk blend fiber content.  Simply lovely!

Lastly, I was able to show off a scarf I made for my mother in her favorite colorway of orange in Online wool blend sock yarn.  Our final project was my version of the Southbay Shawlette in Lanett Merino Superwash baby/sport weight which will (someday) be a wedding wrap for my lovely daughter.

We missed a couple of  ‘regulars’ we didn’t hear from this month – Joyce, Norma, Joan, and Jaclyn.  Hope I didn’t forget anyone!
