Even though it feels like Global Warming has reached its peak here with a high of 103 degrees today, I definitely have crochet on the brain. Seems like I hear and read about so many people who learned to crochet at a very young age and carry their love of fiber and creativity with them into adulthood. In fact, Binky Patrol, which collects and distributes handmade blankets to children in need, says their volunteers are as young as four! It’s a tactile craft (I love the feel of natural-fiber yarn) that can promote fine-motor coordination in younger children, as well as a sense of accomplishment that comes from making something useful from scratch. Even my son, who rarely sits still, wanted to know how to make a chain stitch, so I showed him. He was hooked! Since we’ve been pretty sequestered in the air conditioning here, I’ve gathered some links to crochet sites for children young and old:
Craftbits.com – a Great range of free crochet projects on our sister site.
Crochet for Kids (tutorials, general discussion and kid-friendly projects)
Lion Brand Yarn (one of my favorite sites and my favorite yarn – you can order online, read blogs, find crochet charity groups, view tutorials, and download tons of free and cheap patterns for all kinds of goodies)
Don’t forget, too, that Christmas will be here before you know it. Adults love handmade items from kids, especially if they’re well-made and useful. Start now and you won’t be hustling for last-minute gifts come December!
