This roundup is all about stress balls, I got inspired for writing this post after writing about Crochet balls patterns, in general, a few weeks ago. I kept coming across fun little stress ball crochet patterns and I just knew I had to create a round-up dedicated to these fun little crochet balls. I have tried to include as many fun designs as I could find, if you see something you don’t quite like or agree with, remember to scroll past that crochet ball pattern.

Crocheting a simple ball is easier than it sounds. Try this free pattern to make a simple crocheted ball of about 4 or 5 inches in diameter.

Beginning crocheters sometimes shy away from the idea of crocheting a ball. However, it is not as difficult as it seems. This pattern will make a ball of about 4½ inches in diameter.

MaterialsAny two colored worsted weight yarn(s) are fine. For the purpose of this pattern they are named A and B.

Size H crochet yarn.
Tapestry Needle (to weave in ends)
Fiberfill stuffing.

Pattern

Make the first half of the ball.

Rnd 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2 (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (24 sc)
Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 4 (32 sc)
Rnd 6: (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (40 sc)
Rnds 7-9: Sc in each sc around (40 sc)

Make the band.

Switch yarn to Color B.
Rnds 10-12: Sc in each sc around, finish off leaving tail of about 12 inches long.

Make the second half of the ball.

With Color A yarn, ch 2.
Repeat Rnds 1-9 in Color A.

Finish off.

With tail left from band color of first half of ball, join both halves of the ball together with a whipstitch around, stuffing ball with fiberfill before completely closing.

Further Ideas

Endless looks are possible with this pattern. Try different yarn and a different hook.
Chenille yarn will result in a crushed velvet look.
Bouclé yarn produces a highly-textured ball.
Very thick wool yarn will turn out a homespun-looking item.
Hold strands of worsted weight yarn together and use another sized hook to experiment for a completely different look and size.
Decorate ball with ribbon, pearls, buttons, bells, etc. Caution: if this ball is for a baby, never add anything that the baby may choke on. Always be careful with kids 5 and under and especially careful with the 3 and under crowd. It’s probably best to leave the ball absolutely without garnishment for little ones.

Gift Idea for Toddlers

Since these are so easy to whip up, a cute, inexpensive gift for a toddler would be a set of 3 balls. Make one ball each in red, yellow, and blue, ( the three primary colors).

Be creative with the band color. The set can be used to teach baby colors and how they are formed i.e. red + yellow = orange, yellow + blue = green, and red + blue = purple. An example of this is to make a ball with the first half in red, the band in orange, and the second half in yellow.
