Flip the Bird Crochet Pattern – A Cheeky Make for When Polite Just Won’t Do

January 15, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

Sometimes crochet doesn’t have to be sweet, sentimental, or gift-appropriate… sometimes it just needs attitude. And that’s exactly what the Flip the Bird Crochet Pattern delivers. This is one of those patterns that makes you laugh out loud the moment you see it — bold, cheeky, and very much not your grandma’s doily (unless your grandma has an excellent sense of humour).

This pattern is perfect for anyone who enjoys novelty crochet with personality. It’s the kind of project you make for a friend who “gets it,” keep on your desk as a silent mood indicator, or gift with a wink and a warning. It’s unapologetically funny, and honestly, that’s part of the charm.

From a making point of view, this is a satisfying little project. It’s small enough that it doesn’t overstay its welcome, but detailed enough to feel intentional rather than gimmicky. You’re shaping something recognisable, which always makes crochet more engaging than endless rows of the same stitch. It’s also a great stash-buster and a fun break between larger, more serious projects.

Skill-wise, this sits nicely in the confident beginner to intermediate range. If you’re comfortable with basic shaping and following instructions carefully, you’ll be just fine. It’s not difficult, but it does reward taking your time — especially if you want the finished piece to look clean and expressive rather than rushed.

What I really like about patterns like this is that they remind us crochet can be playful. Not everything has to be heirloom-worthy or nursery-approved. Sometimes it’s okay to make something just because it makes you smile… or makes a very specific point without saying a word.

If you enjoy novelty crochet, quirky gifts, or projects that lean firmly into humour, this Flip the Bird crochet pattern is a fun one to have in your collection — especially when you’re in the mood to crochet something with a bit of sass.
