Free Crochet Pattern – Amma’s Diwali Toron Door Garland

September 18, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

There’s something magical about dressing up your doorway for Diwali. The warm glow of lamps, marigold garlands, and strings of lights make everything feel festive and welcoming. This crochet toran (door hanging) is my handmade spin on traditional Diwali decorations. It uses classic granny squares in rich colors, finished with tassels and beads for a festive touch.

You can whip one up in an afternoon, and it’s a wonderful stash-buster since each square doesn’t take much yarn. Think of it like mixing old traditions with a bit of cozy crochet charm! You can play around with colors to match your own Diwali palette – I went with saffron gold, deep red, and cream, but feel free to add jewel tones, metallic yarns, or whatever speaks “festival of lights” to you.

This toran looks lovely across a doorway, a mantel, or even as wall art. And best of all, it’s completely customizable – add more granny squares for longer spaces or keep it short and sweet for a smaller entryway.

Materials

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Around 100 yards of worsted weight (#4/medium) yarn

  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Wood beads (optional but festive!)

Sizing (for the version shown)

  • Total length: 26 inches (end to end)
  • Each granny square: 3 x 3 inches
  • Tassels: 3 inches long
  • Granny + bead + tassel combo: about 7 inches tall

Part 1 – Granny Squares

Foundation: Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 1 (in pink or green):
Ch 3, then into the center ring work 2 dc, ch 1. Repeat * (3 dc, ch 1) three more times. Join with a slip stitch.

Round 2 (in cream):
Join new color into any ch-1 space. Ch 3, then in the same space work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc).
In next ch-1 space, work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc). Repeat around. Join with a slip stitch.

Round 3 (in pink or green):
Attach yarn in any corner (ch-1 space). Ch 3, then in the same space work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc).
In side space: (3 dc, ch 1). In corner: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc). Repeat two more times.
On final side, work (3 dc, ch 1) in side space. Join with a slip stitch.

Part 2 – Tassels

  1. Cut two 12-inch strands of yarn and set aside.
  2. Wrap yarn around four fingers 20 times.
  3. Slide off carefully, then tie one reserved strand at the top.
  4. Use the second strand to tie around the tassel about ¼ of the way down.
  5. Snip loops at the bottom and trim neatly.
  6. Repeat for each granny square.

Tip: Metallic thread or tiny bells tied into the tassels can make it extra festive for Diwali!

Part 3 – Assembly

  1. Weave in all ends.
  2. Thread two beads onto the top tails of each tassel, then tie onto the bottom corner of a granny square.
  3. With your chosen “string” color (I used red), chain 16.
  4. Slip stitch the first granny onto the chain at its top corner.
  5. Ch 16 again and repeat for each granny.
  6. Finish with another chain-16 for the end.

Tie loops at each end for easy hanging.

And there you have it — a handmade crochet toran to light up your home for Diwali. It’s a sweet mix of tradition and craft, and every time you walk past it, you’ll be reminded of the love and patience in each stitch.
