Golden Snitch Harry Potter Baby Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern

June 14, 2021 by Vikram Goyal

The Golden Snitch Baby Blanket is a must-have for any Harry Potter fan, and is perfect for any new parent looking for a cozy and unique baby blanket. The blanket features a repeating pattern of golden stitches, crocheted in a textured stitch to make them pop from the fabric. Tiny wings flank each golden ball, adding an extra touch of detail and realism to the design. The Snitches rest on a contrasting gray background, which creates a striking contrast and makes the Snitches stand out.

One of the best things about this pattern is its versatility. With a simple repeat, this baby blanket can easily be made bigger, making it the perfect size for a stroller blanket, a receiving blanket, or even a lap blanket. The finished size is customizable so you can make it as big or small as you want.

The Golden Snitch first makes an appearance in the Harry Potter films when Harry learns how to play Quidditch in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry is a natural-born Seeker, and the Snitch in turn becomes an integral part of Harry’s story right up to the end when he opens it to retrieve the Resurrection Stone hidden inside in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

While the Snitch was created digitally for the films, great care was taken by designers to ensure that the Snitch itself would function properly. Many different designs were considered, and the final form featured a hollow ball and retractable wings that gently rolled up inside. “In theory,” says production designer Stuart Craig, “the wings would retract into the grooves on the sphere so that it reverts back to just being a ball.”

NOTES

  • Chains do not count as a stitch throughout pattern.
  • To change colors during a sc, complete the last yarn over of the stitch in the new color, and use the new color to draw through last 2 loops of the st. To change colors during a bobble, ch 1 in new color after drawing through 6 loops and completing the bobble.
  • To minimize carrying yarn throughout the pattern, use small balls of yarn for the white and gold portions of each Snitch. While crocheting the Snitch, carry the gray yarn by crocheting over the strand, and pick up the strand when you switch back to gray. To improve the appearance of carried yarn, crochet over the yarn on the right side (the side with the bobbles sticking out) and drop carried yarn in front of your work on the wrong side. Then, when working the next row on the right side, crochet over the dropped yarn.

Making your own Harry Potter-themed crochet hooks with polymer clay sounds like a fun and creative project. Here are some steps you can follow:  Here is a tutorial for making a wand which will help guide to making your own Harry Potter Crochet Hooks.

  1. Gather Your Materials: You’ll need polymer clay in various colors, a plain crochet hook, sculpting tools, an oven for baking the clay, sandpaper, and possibly some sealant or varnish for finishing touches.
  2. Choose Your Design: Decide which Harry Potter-themed elements you want to incorporate into your crochet hook. This could include symbols like the Deathly Hallows, house crests, magical creatures like owls or unicorns, or even character-inspired designs.
  3. Create Your Wand: Follow tutorials on making wands from polymer clay. There are many resources available online with step-by-step instructions for shaping the clay into a wand-like form, adding texture, and adding any decorative elements like vines, runes, or crystals.
  4. Prepare Your Crochet Hook: Before you start covering your crochet hook with clay, make sure it’s clean and smooth. Sanding the surface lightly can help the clay adhere better.
  5. Wrap the Clay Around the Hook: Roll out your chosen colors of polymer clay into thin, snake-like shapes. Then, carefully wrap them around the handle of your crochet hook, layering and blending as needed to achieve your desired design.
  6. Bake According to Instructions: Once your clay is shaped to your satisfaction, follow the baking instructions for the polymer clay. This usually involves baking the clay in the oven at a specific temperature for a certain amount of time.
  7. Finish and Seal: After baking and cooling, you can add any final touches or details with paint or additional clay if desired. Once you’re happy with the look, seal the clay with a varnish or sealant to protect it and give it a polished finish.
  8. Enjoy Your Custom Creation: Once your Harry Potter-themed crochet hook is complete, you can enjoy using it for all your magical crochet projects!

Remember to have fun and let your creativity flow as you craft your own unique piece inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter!

Hi! You mention it is a simple repeat to make the blanket larger–what is the repeat number of stitches? Please and thank you!

I’m doing something wrong. I’m following the instructions for how to switch the colors but as a star with color be I’m not getting the same pattern on both sides of the bobble. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

It is not stolen, we did a collaboration with the publisher and author to publish this pattern. The byline states that it was used with permission. Please make sure to read our articles in full.

Im glad I was able to try this pattern before purchasing the book. Nice motif idea, but for me, changing yarn color six times in ten stitches didn’t work well or look good.

How would I be able to make this pattern larger for an adult sized throw blanket?

I’d love to know same as others above how to make it larger. What number of stickers do I need to increase by on the base chain.

I can’t stress enough how much it HELPS to make 5 smaller balls of the white yarn. Tried doing this with one big white cake and it made me SO angry.

Also, definitely wouldn’t recommend this for beginners. The stitches are easy to make, but the amount of color-switching is definitely a pain.

Still, a beautiful blanket and a well-written pattern. Gotta pay attention to the tips, though.
