Make Your Own DIY Crochet Face Mask Pattern

March 4, 2020 by Shellie Wilson

This face mask pattern is a great back up plan for the medical-grade respirator masks.  Even if they won’t protect you from getting the dreaded coronavirus they will surely start a great conversation.  I am not going to say if these will work or won’t work, so please don’t e-mail me telling me how to avoid coronavirus or email me telling me the virus doesn’t exist.

Here is the mask pattern which you can buy via Etsy.

Lot’s of people are seeking DIY masks right now and if You don’t sew then this is a great alternative. I highly recommend adding a filter pocket or some cotton fabric to aid.

Check out this article about all the different options for safe and suitable mask filters.   Wondering how to strengthen your mask? Add interfacing.

Need Crochet supplies and Yarn? We highly recommend Lionbrand for quality yarn and ongoing yarn sales and discounts. Mke sure to check out their free crochet patterns too.

Please note that this crochet mask is lined for protection. Please stop messaging me telling me it is not safe to wear. On a side note, lot of people are using crochet masks or knitted face masks as a cover for store-bought masks.

Why not have the pattern for the mask free???

You are so right, I have no respect for people who try to make a profit from a bad situation

Except that person still has bills to pay, maybe they just lost their job? Maybe their whole family did? If you can spare a small amount of money to support the designer isn’t that fair? There are also plenty of FREE patterns if you want to go and look.

The country is being asked to support small and local businesses so why should crochet and knit designers be expected to give away their products?! Because this is related to our current challenge or because some crafters are used to not paying for designs? The price being asked is certainly reasonable. I’m paying it for a coworker. Who will then likely give away the masks from them. But I’ll happily pay for every copy of the pattern I hand off.

Yes I think it wouldn’t hurt their pocket too much to have this pattern free in this time of world health crisis

Opportunistic people everywhere. The worst part of this is that the people are stealing the design and selling and claiming they designed it. They did not. Everyone is out of work, you aren’t special or more deserving. Shame on you.

There are many many free crochet mask designs online, if you don’t want to pay for a design use a free one. I would never sell a pattern that was being used to make something that may be life saving…period. Yes some have lost their jobs etc, but many of those who have are on YouTube showing how to make masks and not trying to sell their patterns. Anyone who knows the basics of crocheting can make a mask without a pattern.

We still pay for food at a restaurant, clothing, etc. why should we not pay for a crochet/knit pattern. Everyone still needs to support their family. Rude comments should not be posted. Shame on you for being rude to others, Jennifer.

  14. Amy McCain says

    April 4, 2020 at 10:51 pm

    You entitled children! Disgusting behavior!!!
As someone who lost both of their jobs for being “nonessential” and relies on a hobby like crocheting to make some kind of meager income, I am only too happy to pay it forward to someone who took the time to make a pattern. If she was asking for some outrageous price, that would be one thing, but it is a nominal fee for the time it took to make the pattern. It will help put food on her table, or help pay a bill.
Support small businesses and don’t be a dick about it!

I think it’s terrible that people try to make money from a mask. You should do the right thing and offer the pattern for free.Shame on you!

No one is forcing anyone to pay. It’s your choice. If there was no crisis and you wanted to pay for a pattern, you would. So why get upset about it now? Plenty free patterns around.

  17. Ann says

    April 5, 2020 at 7:29 pm

Why state free pattern for face mask when it isnt free. I think that’s called bate and hook and for that I will never buy a pattern from you. Very said people are pulling this during this stressful time.

  18. Shellie Wilson says

    April 6, 2020 at 3:20 am

It doesn’t say that the pattern is free?

  19. Laurie says

    April 6, 2020 at 3:42 pm

My first thought was how wrong it is to charge for something like this at this time. I understand being out of work and needing money. Why not make this pattern free and go ahead and charge for other patterns you have created?

  20. Lisa Teague says

    April 7, 2020 at 12:53 pm

If this was a stand alone store, would you walk in take a pattern and walk out without paying? You don’t know the designer’s circumstances. If you don’t want to buy a pattern…….Don’t. Keep on scrolling until you find a free one. Just stop being so nasty. Why not help support the people who out of work. I am recovering from breast cancer surgery (I had a double mastectomy 4 days ago) I was going to make some and take them to the hospital that helped me.

This person DESIGNED a pattern that that takes time and skill and took the time to write it all down to help people find who don’t want to take the time to do it themselves. She absolutely deserves to SELL her pattern. She did us all a favour figuring out the headaches of making it. Why should she GIVE herself away. She is not profiting in any means from a disaster. She is an artist trying to make a decent living like everyone else. I am so sick of of the fucking cheap jerks out there looking /expecting everything for free. Figure out how to make the pattern yourself and shut the F up! Cheap, lazy losers. i am so sick of seeing posts by all of the idiots! I bet you don’t do ONE bloody thing for free! or even do a nice thing for someone, yet will post mean things on innocent peoples websites!

  24. Shanice says

I agree with Ks! I’m sick of people being entitled jerks. They wouldn’t do anything for free and here is someone taking the time to come up with the pattern, take pics, write everything up, pay for the website and the Etsy account upfront and then lazy assholes want to come and bitch about the pattern not being free. Grow up ppl everyone! She deserves to make money for her time.

  25. Akilah t'Zuberi says

    April 13, 2020 at 1:50 pm

Wow. Such insensitive comments towards someone who is simply selling a pattern for masks. I don’t see JoAnn’s giving away elastic, fabric and the other materials needed to make masks; restaurants are not making deliveries for free, grocery stores are not giving away food that we are stocking up on because of the crisis. Crisis can either bring out the best of us which we should acknowledge and affirm, or it can bring out the worst which we should acknowledge and reflect on.

  26. Vanessa says

Thank you for this pattern. For those who think it should be free, there are plenty of people on YouTube you can watch. Of course, you won’t get the WRITTEN pattern, but I’m sure you won’t have trouble following the crocheter or writing the pattern down yourself.

I crocheted one as soon as this virus started. Just made a chain across my face to length i needed. Then single crocheted rows to height i needed. Made 2 more chains, put each end thru a space on each corner of the rectangle, tied the ends of the chain together and had a double loop for over the ear. was a rectangle but usable. I cut a top piece of a man’s tube sock and pinned it to one side for the cotton protection layer.
I get nice comments on it.

10 Free Miffy Crochet Patterns For Adorable Amigurumi Bunnies

There is something wonderfully calming about Miffy. Perhaps it is the simple little face, the neat upright ears or the way she manages to look sweet without needing bows, glitter, eyelashes and seventeen different accessories. Although, as you will see in this roundup, adding a strawberry outfit or tiny princess dress certainly does not hurt.

The search for a Miffy crochet pattern free has been popping up everywhere lately, especially among crocheters who love cute amigurumi, nostalgic characters and handmade gifts that do not require an enormous yarn order. These patterns range from tiny no-sew Miffy keychains to traditional stuffed rabbits, dressed-up versions and larger cuddly toys.

Most use fairly simple amigurumi techniques such as working in continuous rounds, increasing, decreasing, stuffing and sewing a few pieces together. If you have made a basic crochet animal before, you should feel quite comfortable with several of these. Complete beginners may prefer one of the video tutorials or no-sew patterns, where you can watch each step rather than trying to decipher a page of abbreviations while the dog runs away with your yarn.

Miffy is a protected character created by Dick Bruna, so these free Miffy crochet patterns are best treated as personal fan projects unless the individual designer clearly states otherwise. Always read the designer’s usage terms before selling finished toys.

Free Classic Miffy Crochet Pattern

The Miffy Bunny Amigurumi Crochet Pattern from Lovelycraft gives you that instantly recognisable classic shape, complete with long ears, a simple white body and colourful clothing. This is a lovely choice when you want a traditional-sized Miffy doll rather than a miniature keychain.

The instructions are presented as a written amigurumi pattern, making this one particularly handy for crocheters who prefer to print or follow rounds at their own pace. Keep a stitch marker nearby, because those continuous rounds have a sneaky habit of wandering when you become distracted.

Miffy Crochet Pattern With Removable Clothes

The free Crochet Miffy pattern from Sew Dainty was designed with dressing up in mind. That makes it a particularly fun project for children, collectors or anyone who immediately starts planning an entire miniature wardrobe before the bunny is even finished.

A dress-up Miffy also gives you a brilliant excuse to use tiny leftover balls of yarn. Think little dresses, jumpers, scarves and perhaps a pair of overalls if you are feeling especially ambitious.

Free Miffy In Overalls Amigurumi Pattern

This Miffy in Overalls free crochet pattern from Chubbies by Ash is one of the most detailed projects in the roundup. The little overalls give the finished bunny plenty of personality while still keeping the clean, simple Miffy look.

The designer rates it at an intermediate level because it includes sewing, stuffing and assembly. There is also video guidance available, which is very helpful when you reach the stage where several crocheted pieces are sitting on the table and none of them appear to resemble a rabbit yet.

Tiny No-Sew Miffy Keychain Crochet Pattern

The Miffy Bunny No-Sew Crochet Pattern from Sophie Tinie is ideal when you want a quick project rather than a weekend-long amigurumi commitment. The ears are made first and joined into the main piece, keeping the finishing work to a minimum.

Turn the finished bunny into a keychain, bag charm or tiny desk companion. Using plush yarn will create a soft, squishy Miffy, while cotton yarn will give you sharper stitches and a more compact finish.

Strawberry Miffy Free Crochet Pattern

For a sweeter variation, try the Strawberry Miffy Bunny Low-Sew Crochet Pattern. This version adds a pink strawberry-inspired body, green scarf and embroidered yellow details without losing Miffy’s beautifully simple expression.

The finished bunny measures approximately 14 centimetres when made with the suggested bulky yarn. It is a manageable gift-sized project and would look adorable tucked into an Easter basket or attached to a wrapped birthday present.

Free Miffy Crochet Video Tutorial For Beginners

Crocheters who learn best by watching may prefer this beginner Miffy crochet tutorial from Yarn Symphony. It is especially useful for newer crocheters because the project does not require a magic ring, which can be the tiny yarn circle responsible for an unreasonable amount of beginner frustration.

The tutorial covers the ears, head and facial details step by step. Pause as often as you need and keep your stitch marker in place so your rounds remain nice and even.

Free Miffy Bunny In A Dress Pattern

The Miffy Bunny in a Dress amigurumi pattern includes instructions for creating a dressed version of the familiar little rabbit. It is a charming choice for a nursery decoration, handmade birthday gift or Miffy-themed shelf display.

You can keep the dress in a classic primary colour or use soft pastels for a more modern look. This is also a good stash-busting project because the clothing requires only a relatively small amount of contrasting yarn.

Free Miffy Amigurumi Pattern On Ravelry

Sara Y’s classic Miffy Amigurumi pattern on Ravelry has been saved and made by crocheters for many years. The design has a lovely handmade simplicity that suits Miffy perfectly and avoids adding too many unnecessary details.

The pattern is available free for personal use. A free Ravelry account may be required to access all the pattern information and project notes.

Free Princess Miffy Crochet Pattern

The Princess Miffy crochet pattern on Ribblr gives Miffy a wonderfully elaborate makeover with lace, ribbon, beads and colourful yarn. It is an intermediate project and a lovely choice for crocheters who enjoy adding decorative details after the main amigurumi is complete.

Ribblr patterns are interactive, so you can track your progress row by row and switch between US and UK crochet terms. You will need a free Ribblr account to claim and use the pattern.

Free Cozy Miffy Crochet Pattern

The Cozy Miffy crochet pattern on Ribblr is another dressed-up variation for anyone who cannot resist tiny crochet clothing. This design has a snug, wintery feel and would be particularly cute worked in soft neutrals, dusty pink or sage green.

Like the Princess Miffy pattern, it is provided as a free interactive Ribblr pattern. Ribblr limits how many free patterns can be claimed within a set period, so you may need to save it and return later if you have already been collecting patterns.

Free Miffy Crochet Pattern Shared On Instagram

This free Miffy crochet pattern shared by Wai Crochets is a popular social-media pattern with a matching video tutorial available through the designer. The finished bunny has a soft, modern amigurumi look that works beautifully in white cotton or fluffy chenille yarn.

Instagram carousel patterns are handy for saving to your crochet collection, but I recommend taking screenshots for personal reference once you begin. There is nothing quite like reaching round 17 only to discover the app has refreshed and whisked your instructions away.

No-Sew Miffy Keychain Pattern On Instagram

This free no-sew Miffy keychain pattern is another quick option for beginners and market-prep crocheters. Because the main pieces are joined as you work, there is less sewing and fewer yarn tails to manage at the end.

Make several in different yarn weights to create a whole collection. Fine cotton will produce a petite keychain, while plush yarn can turn the same general idea into a cuddly little bag charm.

A Free Kawaii Bunny Pattern From CraftBits

When you want the same sweet minimalist bunny feeling without making a licensed character, the free Kawaii Bunny Amigurumi pattern from CraftBits is a useful alternative. It uses worsted-weight yarn and can be customised with different colours, ribbons, bells or embroidered facial details.

You could keep the body white and add a simple dress in red, yellow or blue for a gently Miffy-inspired finish while still creating your own individual bunny character.

Tips For Crocheting A Neat Miffy Amigurumi

Miffy’s design may look simple, but that simplicity means uneven shaping tends to show. Use a hook slightly smaller than the yarn label recommends so the stuffing does not peek through the stitches.

Stuff the head gradually and firmly, paying particular attention to the sides of the face. Add smaller pieces of stuffing rather than pushing in one enormous handful, or you may end up with a bunny who looks as though she has stored snacks in both cheeks.

Pin the ears and body pieces in place before sewing. Miffy’s expression depends heavily on balance and spacing, so take a moment to check the placement from the front, side and top before making anything permanent.

For toys intended for babies or very young children, embroider the eyes and facial details instead of using safety eyes, buttons, beads or glued felt. Despite the name, safety eyes can still present a hazard if they become loose.

Which Free Miffy Crochet Pattern Should You Try First?

For beginners, I would start with the no-sew keychain or the step-by-step video tutorial. They are small enough to finish without becoming overwhelmed and give you a good introduction to Miffy’s distinctive ears and face.

More experienced amigurumi makers may enjoy the overalls, strawberry or princess versions, where the clothing and finishing details become half the fun.

Whichever free Miffy crochet pattern you choose, this is one of those projects that seems to make everyone smile. Make one for a longtime Miffy collector, crochet a tiny version for your bag or quietly begin an entire wardrobe of miniature outfits. We both know one bunny rarely stays one bunny for long.
