Monarch Butterfly Cardigan Crochet Pattern Review – A Bold, Trending Wearable for Confident Crocheters

April 21, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

What makes this design stand out is that it is not your standard granny-square cardigan or simple oversized shrug. The whole appeal here is the dramatic monarch butterfly wing effect, which gives it that eye-catching, wearable-art feel that crochet lovers are always hunting down when they want something a bit more special than a basic cardigan. From the listing, it is very clearly designed as a statement garment rather than a quick beginner project.

One thing I actually appreciate is that the seller is upfront about the learning curve. The listing says the construction and approach are different from a usual cardigan crochet pattern and recommends buyers be open to trying something new. That honesty is refreshing. We have all bought patterns before thinking, “How hard can it be?” and then found ourselves three rows in, glaring at the yarn like it personally offended us. This one looks better suited to confident crocheters or adventurous intermediates than absolute beginners.

The pattern package sounds fairly thorough too. It includes checklist-style instructions, numbered rows, step-by-step explanations, tips, and 12 pictures/graphics, plus help with reading Stitch Fiddle and tapestry crochet. For a more visual learner, the included video tutorial is a nice bonus and makes the higher price point easier to justify compared to very basic PDF-only patterns.

On Etsy, the item is marked as a Bestseller, with Etsy noting it has had high sales volume over the past 6 months. At the time I checked, the shop showed a 4.7 item average from 28 reviews, and the listing also showed 20+ views in the last 24 hours, which helps explain why this cardigan is showing up as one of those trending crochet fashion pieces people keep clicking on.

My take? If you love crochet wearables, butterfly motifs, and patterns that look a little more fashion-forward than the usual handmade cardigan, this one is easy to see the appeal of. It has that dramatic Pinterest-friendly look that could work beautifully for festival wear, layered autumn outfits, or simply for crocheters who like making garments that get noticed. It is not the cheapest pattern on Etsy, but it does look like one of those designs where the visual payoff is a big part of the value.

For crafters who enjoy trying something a little outside the usual cardigan formula, this trending butterfly cardigan looks like a fun challenge with a very pretty result.

The Alto Mare Wrap – Crochet Pattern

I do love a wrap pattern — especially the kind that feels light, wearable, and just a little bit elegant without being fussy. The Alto Mare Wrap (After Party Pattern 30) by Scheepjes, available through Jimmy Beans Wool, is exactly that sort of project.

What immediately stood out to me is how fluid and airy this wrap feels. It has that effortless drape that works just as well thrown over your shoulders on a cool evening as it does styled up with a dress. This isn’t a bulky winter piece — it’s a lighter layer you’ll reach for again and again, especially in those in-between seasons when you’re not quite sure what the weather’s doing.

From a making point of view, this is a really enjoyable crochet project. The stitch pattern has a lovely rhythm to it — enough movement to keep things interesting, but not so much that you’re constantly checking the instructions. It’s the kind of crochet that feels relaxing rather than demanding, which, at this stage of life, I fully appreciate.

Skill-wise, this sits comfortably in that intermediate space. You don’t need advanced techniques, but a bit of confidence reading stitch patterns and keeping your tension consistent will help. If you enjoy watching fabric grow and change as you work, this wrap is very satisfying — especially as the drape starts to show itself.

What I also love is how adaptable this pattern is. Change the yarn colour and fibre and you can completely shift the mood — soft and romantic, coastal and breezy, or bold and modern. It’s one of those patterns that quietly becomes a wardrobe staple rather than a once-worn piece.

Overall, the Alto Mare Wrap is a beautiful example of a free crochet pattern that feels refined and wearable. If you enjoy crocheting garments and accessories you’ll genuinely use, this one is well worth adding to your project list.
