The title and subject matter of this newly published book intrigued me the moment I saw it. At first, I admit to being a bit confused. I assumed this would be a new technique for creating crochet with different images on either side of the project. Actually, the title refers to crocheting an item that has exactly the same image on both sides, having no front or back.
It took some time and study of the technique for me to understand what was new here. I decided the best ‘test’ would be to share the book and technique with my crochet buddies at the monthly meeting of the St. Louis Crochet Club. This lively group includes knitters and crocheters of all levels, from novice to self-taught masters of the art. Ronnie has an especially analytic approach to crochet. DJ’s approach to any pattern is to find an even more efficient way to accomplish what the designer had in mind. Others around the table included the shop owner and two employees, one of whom is working on her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts – Textiles. Then there are the other prodigious crocheters who have been known to adapt a pattern to suit their needs (and understanding) and a few, like me, who see a pattern as a mere suggestion and find myself in over my head from time to time!
So, we all read the instructions in the book, poured over the pictures and illustrations, pulled out our hooks and yarn and each tried our hands at learning the new technique. It took some doing. But, finally, following the illustrations more than the written instructions, several created some good samples, demonstrating mastery of the technique.
The book is an ambitious production, containing designs for 28 blocks and 10 afghans. The colors are bright and cheerful and I believe the designs will be very popular. Like any new technique, practice, practice, practice make all the difference. I would not recommend this book for a beginner, but for a more advanced or a very adventurous crocheter, Reddig’s technique will make a dandy addition to her/his repertoire.
