Our local crochet club held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. As usual, we had a nice chat, hot tea, and great show ‘n tell. Here’s what everyone had to show.
Marti is making scarves for the Special Olympics in this year’s colors of navy and red. Her first scarf was simple but beautiful. Her next will be a sampler. She had also crocheted a cowl for a family member in Australia.

Mary, Marti’s teen daughter, is still working on the babyghan in bright turquoise and yellow for her new nephew. Better yet, she has designed a pretty ruffled crochet bracelet with a button closure. I’m hoping to get a picture to post here. This is Mary’s own original design! (I’ll post a picture of Mary’s bracelet as soon as possible.)
Melinda finished the baby ripple afghan and mailed it to her twin sister in Colorado. She’s now working on dishcloths in cotton while tending to little Shannon and big sister Renee.
Mandy has been spinning. She had some silk blend laceweight from Dyeabolical (a local yarn producer) and a lovely skein of Merino in Sheep to Shawl. Her WIP is a knitted Feroese Shawl that is the original design of our LYS owner, Georgia Druen.
Rita has been busy knitting socks for herself and her husband, overdying sock yarn, crocheting a shawl of her own granny-inspired design in beautiful autumn colors, and has finished a simple but lovely shrug in Paton’s Nuance yarn – a neat blend of beiges and grays.
Georgia completed the magnificent babyghan for her daughter – a wonder of Noah’s Ark animals marching around a basket weave design in the middle (from LA Year of Baby Afghans #4). This is an heirloom quality afghan that Georgia is sure Erin will let the little one drag around the house. Perfect! She’s also working on a babyghan from Crochet! May, 2011 issue, and has completed a knit shawl pattern that will be a freebie for this weekend’s Yarn Crawl.
Valli designed a beautiful original scarf she has named Nell’s Scarf (after her late mother) in black Zephyr, a silk and wool blend laceweight.
Joan is back with us after an absence of several months! She is knitting socks, a Shoal Water Shawl Pattern (in black) and a Warren Jacket in Thakhi cotton.
Ronnie showed us the finished Sprout Chain Shawlette (rom Crochet So Fine by Kristin Omdahl) and Hat she had as a WIP last month. It’s a beautiful cantaloupe color. Also shown was a Ruthie Marks Wrap in sock yarn in blues – lovely! Ronnie has also been experimenting with hyperbolic designs again. She had several scrubbies inspired by Inside Crochet Magazine worked in pink variegated cotton and three white coasters that were from a Mystery CAL. Finally, a WIP is the Sunny Scarf from Inside Crochet mag in 30 weight cotton in pinks for the owner of her favorite Chinese restaurant, Wan Fu.
Cathy had the show-stopper for the evening – a hexagon swirl motif shawlette which is her original pattern. It’s worked in a pale peach baby yarn but looks very sophisticated. We all offered suggestions for completion of the shawlette – but the work and idea is all Cathy’s. Couldn’t take a picture of it as she was strongly encouraged to enter it in a contest or offer it for publication. She also showed a Knit Double Ten afghan and a WIP of a tunisian bag.
As for me, it’s been a lean month. Still working on my babyghan. My version of this addictive pattern is made in Bernat Softee Baby Funny Print with a 5 mm hook. The yarn wrapper calls for a 4 mm hook, but I prefer the slightly larger, more open pattern. Actually, it looks just like the one pictured here. Have about 10 rows to go!
We love the concept of making long-lasting re-usable dishcloths that are practical and help save the environment. We highly suggest using a 100% Cotton yarn as it stays fresh longer. Everyone can always use a dishcloth right?

I know this is an old post, but I’m interested in the St. Louis crochet group. I live in St. Louis and I’d be interested in visiting, if it’s open to guests. Email me privately and let me know? Thanks –
