I’m not quite sure this is the ‘ultimate’ book of knitting and crochet stitches but it’s a useful one, albeit half of it is devoted to knitting making it virtually worthless to me. If you both knit and crochet, this may well be an excellent resource for you.
I have come to appreciate most of the craft books published by Reader’s Digest. They are thorough and contain great photograpphy. If you don’t need or value schematics and can get along just nicely with a picture and a word description of each stitch, this book is for you. If you need those schematics, chose a different book.
The crochet section begins on page 181 of this 320 page book, with the last few pages taken up by the Index. It’s a hefty book too – not one you’ll want to prop in your lap while you crochet.
