Unexpected Afghans is the latest book by Robyn Chachula. This splendid book will entice you with its collection of richly textured afghans of all sizes and, as the title states, unexpected stitch and color combinations. From a few twists on the versatile granny square, through tunisian and cables, to a remarkable Exploded Pineapple round ripple, you’ll find innovative patterns that will please and inspire you.
Robyn Chachula always seems to come up with pattern collections that appeal to a wide variety of crocheters – from beginner to skilled. This book will not disappoint. I have several favorites that jumped immediately to my WIM list – the brightly colored Dots + Poppies Baby Blanket which looks like a jumble of large blooms but is actually constructed in simpler rows – the basket weave Peerie Baby Blanket which surprises with charted color blocks – and the absolutely delicious Exploded Pineapple round ripple blanket made with sportweight yarn.
You’ll find favorites too. There are many to choose from (29 in all) which includes a couple of smaller pillow projects. The patterns are designed by 24 crochet luminaries whose work is widely admired (Omdahl, Guzman, Chan, Emborsky, Eckman, Ohrenstein, Ventura, Petavyto mention but a few). Add this book to your collection and you won’t be disappointed!

From the descriptions of some of the afghans I am sure I would find something new to crochet for the grands and greats. As well as for charity.
