PUT SOME COLOR IN YOUR CROCHET

April 4, 2010 by jd wolfe

Most everyone has a preference for a color – pink or blue, green or yellow, lavender or orange.  Some people are really talented at combining colors, taking some simple color choices and creating something spectacular with them.  The impact of color is all around us.

Crochet Designer Kathy Merrick has presented quite a number of yummy color combinations in her new book, “Crochet In Color”.  Staying away from ‘safe’, Merrick ventures to some unexpected color pairings which work magnificently.  In fact, this book could be considered one huge advertisement for colorful yarns!

You may know the designers name from her very popular Babette Blanket, a fairy land of color in the form of various sized granny squares joined into a single rectangle.  This crocheter knows her colors!

In addition to color, this book also contains some fresh new shape work.  The deceptively simple pleated hat is very appealing.  It actually screams for an antique broach!  The cover cardigan in yellow, Firefly Cardigan, brings a fresh, bright Spring floral color forward but allows the lace edging to finish things off nicely.

Several projects in the book use Koigu or Nori multicolor yarns, combined with similarly patterned yarns in contrasting colors.  This is a technique I would really like to master.  I plan to get several skeins of the suggested yarns and play with them to better learn how to combine the colors.

If you’re interested in adding more color to your crochet or, like me, just need to learn more about color, this is book is a great resource.  I’m so glad to have it in my library!

As being a synesthesian artist I live a life in colors. Synesthesia means that I see colors when I see words and numbers.I transform this in paintings of names and birthdays.
